Golding acquired the taste for round the world racing in the 1991-3 British Steel Challenge, in which he won 2 of the 4 legs and established a record for the fastest crewed west-about circumnavigation with stops. The British Steel Challenge had been with 14 amateur crew, but this time Golding took the challenge alone.
He single-handedly circumnavigated the world, sailing from east to west against the prevailing winds and currents. Golding beat the existing record set by Sir Chay Blyth, by an amazing 125 days – the journey took a world record beating 161 days.
