SUMMARY
This event is steeped in history, dating back to the 1925. It was originally a race for amateur British sailors, but soon attracted foreign sailors. Even though it's a relatively short distance and not across an ocean, the popularity of this race has grown over the years. Big British names such as Francis Chichester, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Edward Heath helped boost the event's popularity in the 1970s. The event is open to all classes of boats with both professional and amateur sailors, which makes for a spectacular sight at the start and a fascinating race to follow
